On 4 October, Bologna celebrates the feast of its patron saint, San Petronio, an event that involves the entire city in a series of religious, cultural and social events.
Bishop of Bologna in the 5th century, San Petronio was so influential that he was proclaimed protector of the city. The Basilica of San Petronio dedicated to him, located in Piazza Maggiore, is one of the most important symbols of the capital of Emilia: admired by millions of tourists every year, it represents a symbol of collectivity and sharing very important, so much to be called “The house of the Bolognesi“.
For this reason, the Patron Saint’s Day in Bologna unites the community with moments of religious reflection, cultural events and celebrations that involve the entire city and embrace various aspects of life in Bologna.
Patron of Bologna: the events of 4 October
This year, the city is preparing to host a series of events to celebrate its Patron saint.
The celebrations will begin on Thursday, October 3 at 21:00 with a splendid free concert performed by the choir and instrumentalists of the San Petronio Musical Chapel.
The next day, Friday 4 October, will be the heart of the celebrations of the Patron Saint’s Day in Bologna. After the mass, celebrated in the morning, in the afternoon, Piazza Maggiore will host concerts performances and artistic performances.
There will be craft markets, food and wine stands with local products and workshops for children. The evening will end with a show of lights and projections that will illuminate the Basilica, creating a magical atmosphere.
